Lucie Horvathova is one of the few Roma in the Czech Republic with a university education. She understands the importance of education in the Roma community, where many children do not attend school for a variety of reasons, such as money or cultural differences.  For example, many Roma children cannot attend the public school because they do not speak Czech, the country’s official language. As a social worker in the community, Lucie devotes her life to helping the Roma people and improving education. Though she lost in the 2010 parliamentary elections, she continues to pursue a career in government, in hopes of setting an example for the community and raising awareness about major Roma issues.
